Housing Stability Nonprofit Faces Discrimination and Retaliation Allegations From Former Employees
It is a familiar story by now that organizations whose ostensible purpose is to help people often end up being miserable places to work. Only part of this phenomenon is attributable to the fact that professions where one’s job is to help people at their worst moments, the work of critical care nurses and social workers, is inherently stressful. It is not against the law for jobs to be inherently difficult; if it were, then much of the necessary work in the world would never get done. It is against the law, however, for employers to antagonize workers and to fire them from their jobs in retaliation for exercising their legal rights. A nonprofit organization whose mission is to help people who have experienced homelessness retain a stable housing situation is facing lawsuits from five former employees who claim that the organization terminated their employment after they complained about unfair practices. If you work in the nonprofit sector, and your employer has retaliated against you for engaging in a legally protected action, contact a Los Angeles discrimination and harassment lawyer.
Vulnerable Employees Struggled to Balance Work With the Responsibilities of Caring for Children and Pets
A nonprofit organization in California helps its clients find and retain housing after they have experienced homelessness, but five former employees claim that the termination of their employment was due to discrimination or retaliation. Family status, including marital status, parenthood, and pregnancy, is a protected characteristic, but three women, two Black and one Latina, claim that the nonprofit fired them because of their childcare responsibilities. When they were hired, they told the employer that they were single mothers, and the employer set their work schedules in a way that would accommodate their childcare responsibilities. After they had worked there for more than a year, the employer suddenly changed their schedules. When the employees complained about this, the employer terminated their employment.
Two Black men were fired for trivial reasons, and when they complained, their employers’ response revealed a double standard that penalizes Black men disproportionately. One of them accidentally sent a text message to a client outside of work hours, and in response, she accused him of stalking her. The other brought his dog to work one day; he had been a client of the organization before then, and the employer knew that he had no one to take care of his dog while he was at work on that day and could not leave it alone at his apartment. The men claim that the abrupt termination of their employment, without due process, was discriminatory.
