Director of Professional Sports League Files Sex Discrimination Lawsuit

Discrim3

Most of the young fans who dream of sports careers do not end up as professional athletes, even though they may have played their favorite sport competitively in their youth.  A substantial number of them do, however, pursue careers where they can be surrounded by people who love sports as much as they do.  How many sports journalists, youth sports coaches, and physical therapists chose their line of work because any job where people are always in the mood to talk about sports is a fun job?  Unfortunately, jobs that are supposed to be about fun can turn out to be hotbeds of misanthropy.  Just look at the lawsuits filed by video game developers and by backup dancers for famous recording artists.  Unfortunately, attaining a high-ranking position with a fun-focused employer is not a guarantee that you can avoid any unlawful employment practices.  If you are suffering from a hostile work environment even though your job description makes your job sound like fun, contact a Los Angeles discrimination and harassment lawyer.

Woman Claims Wrongful Termination of Employment After She Brought Sports League Into the Internet Era

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, American men spent countless hours glued to their computer screens and, later, their smartphones and tablets, watching games of their favorite sport and consuming content related to it in the form of highlights, commentary, and interviews with players and coaches.  They probably do not know the name of the woman who was instrumental in bringing the sports league into the digital age.  From 2003 until 2022, she was one of the three highest ranking employees at a media network affiliated with a national professional sports league.  She was vice president of one of the company’s three major departments.  In 2010, the employer hired a new vice president of media operations, and in 2011, it hired a new vice president of programming.  The two new vice presidents antagonized the plaintiff incessantly.  They conspicuously ignored her during meetings, and they lived up to the reputation they had gained at their other jobs for openly contemptuous treatment of female coworkers, especially those in decision-making roles.

The plaintiff formally complained about the other two vice presidents in 2019, and as a result, the hostile work environment became even more hostile.  The employer eventually fired the plaintiff in 2022; she claims that the termination of her employment was retaliation for her sex discrimination complaint.  In 2023, she filed a lawsuit against the employer, alleging discrimination, retaliation, and wrongful termination of employment.
