Employees at Medical Technology Company Sue After Unfair Demotions and Terminations

Discrimination2

By now, it is almost a stereotype that California companies that produce and market high tech products are plagued by a “frat house culture.”  This phrase has come up in lawsuits against video game companies and software development enterprises, among others.  It is as though the tech sector is working twice as hard to live down its reputation for nerdiness.  This is bad news for the mild-mannered employees who just want to use their scientific knowledge in an economically productive way and then go home and live a quiet life.  It is worse for the consumers of everyday technologies, since the products would presumably be less expensive if so much of the companies’ budgets did not go to partying.  Even at workplaces that put less effort into having fun, many employees find that things get uglier when they voice their concerns about mistreatment or mismanagement.  Therefore, the fact that three women are suing their former employer, a medical technology company, because it retaliated against them when they complained about the frat house atmosphere, comes as a surprise to no one.  If your employer retaliated against you for complaining about a workplace where the fun never ends, contact a Los Angeles discrimination and harassment lawyer.

Plaintiffs Allege Harassment and Unlawful Retaliation

In 2023, courts in three California counties received employment discrimination lawsuits against the same employer, a company that makes blood tests for medical diagnosis.  The lawsuits corroborate each other’s depiction of the employer spending lavish sums of money on publicity stunts, as well as on meals and alcohol for its high-ranking employees at in-house events, and where sexual harassment was rampant.

The first plaintiff claims that she did not receive a bonus for closing a deal for which she did most of the work, while male coworkers who played a lesser role in the deal received bonuses.  She also claimed that a vice president at the company groped her at a company Christmas party.  The second plaintiff claims that she complained to the same vice president about derogatory remarks made by a female coworker, and as a result, the vice president gave her a negative performance review.  The third plaintiff, who is of Asian descent, claims that her supervisors would make racist comments in front of Asian patients; she also claims that she was retaliated against her, when the company terminated her employment while she was on medical leave.

Their complaints collectively show an unprofessional atmosphere and “frat house culture” at the company.
