Employees of Company That Makes Popular App File Sex Discrimination Lawsuit

Discrimination

Making smartphone apps sounds like a dream job.  You get to create and solve technical puzzles with like-minded people, and the finished product is part of the fabric of people’s daily lives.  Tech jobs are not always the paradise of nerdy fun that they sound like.  Employment discrimination lawsuits tell of many tech companies where female employees start out enthusiastic about their jobs, only to find that their male coworkers go out of their way to make them feel unwelcome.  One might expect this at tech companies that market their products to a mostly male audience; in fact, the targets of some of the worst allegations are companies that make video games famous for their popularity with teen boys and young men.  By this logic, one might expect that companies that love female customers would be friendlier toward female employees, but this is not always the case.  In a lawsuit recently filed in California, a group of women who worked for an app developer do not recount any stories of epic frat house misbehavior; their complaints relate to garden variety employment discrimination.  If your fun job turned sour because your coworkers could not get past a protected characteristic of yours, contact a Los Angeles discrimination and harassment lawyer.

Employer Gave Female Employees Unfairly Negative Performance Reviews and Discouraged Them From Applying for Promotions

The company that produces a popular messaging app agreed in June 2024 to pay a $15 million dollar settlement to be divided among a group of women who had worked for the company between 2014 and 2024.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit worked as engineers for the app and were hired in entry-level roles.  Although the company ostensibly offered opportunities for career advancement, the vast majority of the employees promoted from entry-level roles were male.  The plaintiffs claimed that their supervisors discouraged them from applying for promotions.  If they applied anyway or complained to human resources, the employer retaliated against them with negative performance reviews and, in some cases, termination of employment.

As of June 2024, the plaintiffs and the defendant have agreed to the settlement amount; news websites did not indicate how many plaintiffs will receive a share of the settlement.  The court must still approve the settlement amount, and it will only do this after conducting an audit to determine the extent of sex discrimination at the company; the company may have discriminated against many more employees besides the ones who participated in the lawsuit.
